Artist

Ellis Fox
Ellis Fox (they/them) is an illustrator, designer, and painter with their roots in Charleston, South Carolina. They received their BFA for illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and have been recognized through the Society of Illustrators, Booooooom, 3x3, and Communication Arts. Unraveling observations of bodily and social awkwardness and play is the backbone of their practice. This exploration leads into stylized characters that are fumbling, gaining their balance together, on a mission to become closer.

Pieces are spur of the moment. The moment where I get too ahead in a planning stage, the back and forth loses its charm to me. I’ll start with a physical direction, some kind of sweep with a brush, and see what kind of creature comes out of it. Maybe along the way, I’ll notice a leg is especially long, or a fist is clenched. And then, it will feel like it needs a character with an opposing fist, or hoof, or mouth. They get talking, and soon enough, they might fight, or dance, or embrace. It’s all a little unserious, like playing pretend again- pushing the big feelings into little quips or nods. I’m putting on costumes, trying to talk to an everyday unconscious, and opening it up for a slightly strange, slightly sweet giggle or squint.
